Mr David Lunt is a Consultant Ophthalmologist. He specialises in Cataract Surgery, and all aspects of outpatient, laser and surgical care for patients with or at risk of developing Glaucoma. David qualified from Newcastle Medical School, and, following additional work during his university years was awarded a Diploma in Medical Studies from Durham University. He spent a year in Edinburgh for his junior Ophthalmology rotations and completed his ophthalmic training in the North East (rotating to all local hospitals with eye departments including Darlington, Durham, Bishop Auckland, Middlesbrough, Newcastle and Sunderland). Following this he was recruited onto the esteemed Clinical Glaucoma Fellowship in Moorfields Eye hospital NHS Foundation Trust in London, working closely with world-leading visionaries in the field of Glaucoma including Professor Sir Peng Khaw and Professor Gus Gazzard. Here, he learned innovative surgical techniques and approaches to outpatient care. The local population are already benefitting from this in his role as the Glaucoma Service Lead in South Tees NHS Foundation Trust. His clinical expertise includes assessing patients who have been told they may have a risk of developing glaucoma, right through to managing advanced cases who have already lost portions of their vision and are rightly concerned that every clinical decision is critical. He is adept at all forms of glaucoma laser including iridotomy and selective laser trabeculoplasty, minimally invasive glaucoma surgical techniques (MIGS), and more traditional glaucoma surgery (trabeculectomy, aqueous shunt surgery). He is also a proficient cataract surgeon and has completed several thousand cataract operations. Mr Lunt works closely with the charity Glaucoma UK, both as a Consultant and Educator. He passionately believes patient communication is the cornerstone of successful management of the individual with glaucoma, through engagement and mutual understanding between the clinician, the patient and their loved ones.
