Mr David Jenkins

Consultant cardiothoracic surgeon at Royal Papworth hospital for over 20 years. I graduated (MB BS) from Middlesex Hospital Medical School at the University of London in 1989, with a first class intercalated BSc in physiology 1986, and trained in surgery in London (FRCSEng 1993). I spent a 2 year formal research period investigating ischaemic preconditioning and myocardial protection at the Hatter Institute/UCL, and was awarded London University Master of Surgery (MS) in 1997. My training in cardiothoracic surgery was on the West London rotation (Harefield, Hammersmith and St Georges’ hospitals, FRCSCTh 2000) and I was appointed as consultant at Papworth hospital in 2001. I have experience in all aspects of adult cardiac surgery. Specialist experience includes intra thoracic transplantation, mechanical circulatory support including ventricular assist devices and ECMO. In 2004 I became lead surgeon for the national pulmonary endarterectomy programme. Since then I have become an international expert in this operation. I am currently the divisional director for surgery at Royal Papworth Hospital. Research interests are related to myocardial protection, pulmonary hypertension and pulmonary endarterectomy surgery.
