Mr Biral Patel

I graduated as a doctor from the University of Bristol in 1995 and was awarded an MB ChB. Following my pre-registration posts, I worked in A&E Department at the Bristol Royal Infirmary and also was a Lecturer in Anatomy (Anatomy Demonstrator) at the the University. Following my Basic Surgical Training and MRCS qualification, I undertook a 2-year period of formal research culminating in the award of an MD from Bristol. This research involved multiple centres (Bristol and London - King's, St. Bart's, St. George's) and was supported by large grants totalling over £350,000 from the Department of Health, Astra Zeneca Foundation and the Prostate Cancer Charity. My specialist interest was the Incidence and Epidemiology of Prostate Cancer amongst Black Men in the UK. This was then followed by my Higher Surgical Training in Urology. In 2006, I became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS Urol). I was appointed as a Consultant Urological Surgeon in Gloucestershire in 2007 and I continue to this day. I was the Clinical Director for Urology at Gloucestershire Hospitals between 2012 and 2015. My big achievements include the introduction of Laser Prostate Surgery (Holmium Laser) in 2010 and in 2014 was instrumental in bringing Robotic Surgery to Gloucestershire following a 6-year campaign and fundraising. We are now a large-volume Robotic Centre and the Regional Urological Cancer Centre for Robotic Pelvic Cancer Surgery. I also play an active role in urological training, having previously been the Training Programme Director for Urology in the Southwest. I am extremely proud to be one of the senior Consultants in the Department of Urology at Cheltenham General Hospital and enjoy working with a fantastic bunch of colleagues, many of whom are my ex-trainees. Outside my normal NHS work, I have an interest in the transformation of Healthcare and have helped develop a very successful community diagnostic service for Urology in Gloucestershire.
