Mr Morrell qualified from Birmingham University Medical School, and the majority of his ophthalmology training was undertaken at the Birmingham & Midland Eye Hospital. He undertook a corneal fellowship at St Thomas’s Hospital, London before being appointed as consultant Ophthalmologist at St James’s University Hospital in 1992.
Mr Morrell has a special interest in cataract, corneal and complex anterior segment surgery.
Since 1993 he has specialised in refractive surgery including refractive laser correction of spectacle error with LASIK, SMILE, LASEK, PRESBYOND and wavefront guided treatments.
He undertakes refractive lens surgery procedures include multifocal, toric and phakic lens implants.
From 2004 to 2006 Mr Morrell was appointed a member of the Royal College Of Ophthalmologists Working Party for the development of: Guidelines to Standards For Laser Refractive Surgery [published Dec 2004] and Patients Guide to Excimer Laser Surgery [published March 2006].
Mr Morrell is involved in the teaching of medical students and surgical trainees and was appointed Regional Director of Training for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists 1997 – 2002.
He has been an examiner for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, Certificate in Laser Refractive Surgery, since its inception in 2007 to 2019.
Mr Morrell has provided expert witness medico-legal reports since 1996. He successfully undertook the Cardiff University Expert Witness Certificate in 2014.
