GMC reg: 4259080Andrew Gibbons qualified in Dentistry from Guy’s Hospital, London, in December 1983. In April 1986 he joined the RAF as a Dental Officer after 2 years of hospital jobs in the NHS. In 1987 he was selected for military Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery training He passed his final fellowship examination in dental surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1988 and was awarded the Dean’s Medal for the most outstanding candidate in that year. In 1995 he completed medical training at St John’s College at Cambridge University and qualified with a distinction in his surgical final examinations. He was awarded his Master of Arts from Cambridge in 1997 and passed his fellowship examination in surgery in general at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1998. He passed his intercollegiate exit FRCS examination in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in May 2003 and was appointed as a consultant in Peterborough in 2004. His fields of interest include facial traumatology, orthognathic surgery, oral surgery, and facial pain. He has a commitment to research and audit with over 80 peer reviewed publications and written 6 chapters for books. He regularly lectures at regional, national and international meetings on subjects from ‘Aviation Dentistry’ to ‘The Management of Ballistic Facial Injuries’. As a consultant he is audit and governance lead for his department, adviser to the Peterborough coroner on forensic odontology, and a referee for the British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. In 2006 he was awarded The Lady Cade Medal from the Royal College of Surgeons of England for his academic work and contributions to military surgery. He was appointed as a surgical adviser at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and an honorary fellow of St John’s College Cambridge in 2012. In December 2013 he commenced his tenure as tri- service Defence Consultant Adviser in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. In 2016 he was awarded the RAF Dental Branch Lean Memorial for academic contributions to the Branch. He retired from the RAF in July 2017 and is now in full time NHS practice at Peterborough City Hospital and the Fitzwilliam Private Hospital as an NHS OMFS consultant. He has been awarded 3 clinical excellence awards on merit since 2017. He keeps fit with running and has completed 100 park runs with a Personal Best of 22 minutes 37 seconds.
