I am a Consultant General and Upper Gastro-intestinal surgeon (since March 2001) at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. My practice includes bariatric (weight loss) surgery. My additional surgical interests include laparoscopic (key-hole) surgery for gallstones and anti-reflux surgery, and the surgical repair of abdominal wall hernias of all types including complex incisional hernias. I resigned my permanent NHS contract in May 2022 but continue to work on a zero hour contract (The Bank). My post included the responsibility for the care and management of general surgical emergencies including major trauma. I also hold a zero hour contract with Oxford University Hospitals, England, undertaking sessional work to help develop their complex abdominal wall repair service. I also undertake general surgery and upper gastro-intestinal surgery within the private sector based at the Spire Murrayfield Hospital, Edinburgh. I am in good standing with the General Medical Council. I am a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. I represent this College on SIGN (Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network) Council . I am a member of the British Hernia Society (of which I am Past-President having served as President and Education Secretary), the European Hernia Society (General Secretary, previously Board member with a responsibility for Social Media) and the British Obesity and Metabolic Surgical Society. I am co-treasurer of the UEMS Abdominal Wall Section Executive Committee. In my spare time, I enjoy a variety of hobbies and interests. My two boys keep me fit. I have my Private Pilot’s License and used to fly a Piper Archer out of Edinburgh Flying Club (prior to the club’s demise). I have a very keen interest in Formula 1 motor racing and I was a member of the trackside medical team at the 2000 Melbourne Grand Prix. For relaxation, I enjoy using my hands at embroidery and gardening. As an adopted Scotsman, I have a particular interest in the period of Scottish history which ended at the Battle of Flodden! – and of course whisky!! And the outdoors in Scotland, in any weather!
