Mr Alexander Armstrong

In 2021, Alexander Armstrong was appointed as Consultant Plastic, Reconstructive and Hand Surgeon based at University Hospital Plymouth NHS Trust.  Mr Armstrong graduated from the University of Nottingham in 2009 with intercalated BMedSci (Hons) and BMBS degrees. He would become a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS) in 2013 and later a Fellow (FRCS Plast) in 2019. After graduating medical school in 2009, Alexander Armstrong started as a junior doctor in Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton before spending a year at The Prince of Wales Hospital, Sydney, Australia as a senior surgical resident and orthopaedic registrar. After returning to the South West of England in 2012 to undertake a Plastic Surgery themed Core Surgical Training in Exeter where he ranked 1st in the selection process, he secured his Plastic Surgery higher training on the Oxford Rotation. Mr Armstrong has trained in plastic surgery units of Exeter, Liverpool, Chester, Portsmouth, Stoke Mandeville, Oxford, and Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children. As well as training internationally in Australia and USA, Alexander also went on a charitable mission to Cambodia. Continuing his focus on children’s surgery, Mr Armstrong undertook a subspeciality fellowship at Great Ormond Street Hospital concentrating on children’s limb differences, hypospadias, vascular anomalies, and skin lesions. His particular interest in hypospadias surgery saw him undertake a travelling fellowship where he visited seven units in England. An additional interest of Mr Armstrong’s is patient safety and driving quality improvement in healthcare. In 2016, he spent the year as a fellow to Professor Sir Mike Richards, the Chief Inspector of Hospitals and worked under Professor Sir Bruce Keogh, then NHS England National Medical Director. Whilst working in these roles, Alexander inspected various healthcare environments and advised inspection methodology for surgery and cosmetics to the CQC, where he remains a Specialist Advisor.  A founding member and trustee of the Cosmetics Practice Standards Authority, Mr Armstrong, along with a team of experts, developed the standards for non-surgical procedures which were launched in the House of Lords in 2018. Alex Armstrong continues to offer upper limb surgery for both adults and children, working closely with the orthopaedic team at Derriford to provide limb reconstruction for the Major Trauma Centre.
