Mr Adam Critchley

I am a Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon who qualified in 2001 from Newcastle Medical School with Distinction. I have completed the majority of my surgical training in the North-East but I have also trained for 12 months in Adelaide, Australia (2002-03) and completed a 12 month nationally appointed TIG Oncoplastic Breast Fellowship in Sheffield in 2011-12. I am a full-time NHS and the longest serving Breast Consultant at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle upon Tyne commencing in September 2013. I have been the Head of Department since October 2020. I currently treat in excess of 175 breast cancers per year (UK average ~ 100-110/year). The RVI breast unit is the largest breast screening and training unit in the North East. I am Course Director for the National Oncoplastic Fellowship (TIG) workshop held in Newcastle each year. I am Course Director for the Association of Breast Surgery Level 1 Oncoplastic Breast Course held in Bristol each year. I teach regional and national trainees. I play an active role in clinical research as Primary Investigator (PI) for nationally funded (NIHR) clinical trials.  I am an Assigned Educational Supervisor to trainees and medical students at all levels. I give invited lectures regionally and nationally to help improve patient care. I regularly mentor international students and trainees who apply for clinical observorships and electives within my practice.  I strive to deliver excellent patient care and the highest levels of patient satisfaction possible. My specialist interests are the management of patients with breast cancer and those interested in cosmetic breast surgery.  I frequently perform procedures to improve breast symmetry including breast reduction, mastopexy (uplift), breast augmentation, nipple reconstruction and lipomodelling as part of my routine NHS practice. I also perform these procedures privately for patients who want to improve their body image, quality of life and function. I was invited to write an article for the 'Health and Well-being' section for the Daily Telegraph ('Saturday' section) on 8th April, 2023 on Cosmetic Breast Surgery.
