Mr Abeezar Sarela

PROFESSIONAL POSITIONS: Mr Sarela is a Consultant Surgeon in Leeds since 2003. He works in the NHS at St James's University Hospital, and he practices privately at Nuffield Hospital and Spire Hospital. He is an Honorary Senior Lecturer in the School of Medicine and a PhD Research Scholar in the School of Law, University of Leeds.  PROFESSIONAL MEMBERSHIPS: Mr Sarela is a member of the Association of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons, the British Obesity & Metabolic Surgeons Society and the British Medical Association. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Glasgow.  TRAINING & LICENSURE: Mr Sarela graduated in Mumbai, and trained in London, Leeds and New York. He has been awarded the Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training by the Royal Colleges of Surgeons, and he has full registration with the General Medical Council. Mr Sarela participates rigorously in continuing professional development activities and has annual appraisal. He is fully up-to-date with the latest guidance from National Institute for Health and Care Excellence and other professional organisations. RESEARCH: Mr Sarela has published over 50 papers in medical journals, and he has lectured extensively. He has been awarded a PhD degree for research on the ethics and law of informed consent for surgery.  SPECIALISATION: Mr Sarela specializes in Laparoscopy (Keyhole Surgery) for Weight Loss, Acid Reflux, Hernias, Gallstones, Achalasia and Cancer. 

Mr Sarela specializes in Keyhole Surgery, also called Laparoscopy or Minimally Invasive Surgery, for:·      Weight Loss (Bariatric Surgery): Laparoscopic Gastric Band, Gastric Bypass, Gastric Sleeve for severe obesity. Endoscopic procedures: Gastric Balloon and EndoBarrier®.·      Acid Reflux: Laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication and LINX®magnetic bead ring for treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (also called GERD or GORD). ·      Gallstones: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy for gallbladder stones causing pain, infection (cholecystitis & cholangitis), jaundice and pancreatitis.·      Hernia: Laparoscopic surgery to repair inguinal and femoral (groin) hernias, Sportsman’s hernia, umbilical hernia, incisional hernia, and hiatus hernia.·      Achalasia: Laparoscopic cardiomyotomy (Heller’s operation) for treatment of difficulty to swallow because of non-relaxation of oesophageal sphincter.·      Gastroparesis: Gastric pacemaker (Enterra®) for the treatment of chronic nausea and vomiting from delayed stomach emptying in diabetes and other conditions.·      Cancer: Multi-disciplinary treatment of cancer of oesophagus and stomach with chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery (oesophagectomy and gastrectomy).
