Mr Mohammad Ashraf Khan Raja is a Consultant General & Colorectal Surgeon at Epsom & St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust in Surrey. He is a trained general surgeon with a special interest in colorectal surgery. His special interests include endoscopy, day case surgery, laparoscopic general and colorectal surgery, surgery for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), colorectal cancer, faecal incontinence and pelvic floor dysfunction disorders and abdominal hernia repair. Initial consultation fee will not exceed £200 and follow-up consultation fee will not exceed £150.  Academic background He graduated from King Edward Medical College Lahore Pakistan in 1984 and received his basic surgical training in Mayo Hospital Lahore, Pakistan and acquired Fellowship of College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (FCPS) in 1991. After obtaining his FRCSI 1991 and FRCS (Eng) 1992, he joined South West Thames Higher Surgical Training Scheme. During this training, he completed MSc in Surgical Sciences in1996 from University of London, Diploma in Medical Education in 1997 from Cardiff and Intercollegiate FRCS in 1998. He achieved his certificate of completion of surgical training (CCST) in 1999. He has several publications in peer reviewed journals. Mr Raja is involved in teaching and training of junior doctors, medical students and nurses. He is a tutor for endoscopy course Royal College of Surgeons England, Assessor for Royal College of Surgeons England, Director of Clinical Audit, Director of Medical Education and Clinical Lead for Endoscopy in Epsom & St Helier NHS Trust.  Professional Memberships Mr Raja is on the Specialist Register with the General Medical Council (No. 4163947).

You may be advised by your GP/Consultant to have a colonoscopy to investigate if you have one or more of the following symptoms: bleeding from rectum blood or mucus in stools unexplained abdominal pain changes in bowel habits such as constipation or diarrhoea loss of weight anaemia feeling really tired for no reason faecal occult blood positive test previous polyps or bowel cancer screening for bowel cancer abnormality on CT scan Flexible Sigmoidoscopy Flexible sigmoidoscopy is a daycase procedure to examines distal part large bowel for changes or abnormalities such as polyps and bowel cancer. Flexible sigmoidoscopy is an internal examination of distal large intestine including rectum, sigmoid and descending colon. It is performed using a flexible instrument called colonoscope. Procedure is done as a day case with or without sedation and rarely under General Anaesthesia. Flexible sigmoidoscopy is used to investigate symptoms or for surveillance of bowel conditions including bowel cancer, polyps, crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis and diverticular disease. It allows biopsies and polyps can be removed and sent for testing.
