Mr Mel Grainger

Following completion of my medical degree at Manchester University in 1992, I completed basic surgical training in the North West in 1997 and my higher surgical training on the West Midlands rotation in 2003. I undertook a combined orthopaedic and neurosurgical fellowship in 2003 in Liverpool. I was appointed as a consultant spinal surgeon at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in 2004 where I developed a specialist spinal tumour practice and was clinical lead from 2009-2018. I moved to University Hospital Birmingham in 2018 and have continued with a broad practice across all specialties of spinal surgery. I lecture and teach regularly to primary care, non-specialist consultants and specialist in spinal surgery around the world, in particular focusing on spinal oncology.

My major specialty interest is spinal tumours, both primary and metastatic disease. I also have significant experience in: Degenerative conditions of lumbar spine Degenerative conditions of cervical spine Spinal trauma Spinal Infections Although I have experience, I do not regularly treat paediatric spinal deformity as a lead clinician, or intradural spinal pathology
