Mr Mitchell graduated in medicine at the University of Aberdeen in 1999, before his basic and higher surgical training in Edinburgh through to 2013. Mr Mitchell undertook a diploma in Sports and Exercise Medicine from the University of Bath during his surgical training, and maintains an interest in sports injuries. Mr Mitchell spent a year, from 2013-2014 in Sydney, Australia on fellowship developing his skills in revision and complex primary joint replacements, before commencing as a consultant for NHS Grampian in August 2014. Mr Mitchell has been a registered consultant at Albyn Hospital since 2018.

Mr Mitchell specialises in lower limb surgery, particularly primary and revision hip and knee replacements, as well as sports injuries. He utilises muscle sparing approaches for hip replacements, including minimal posterior approach, and direct anterior approach(DAA). He also offers robotically assisted surgery using the MAKO robotic arm
