I also underwent specialist fellowship training in hip and knee replacement surgery in Canada, Switzerland, and Japan. I am a past President of the British Orthopaedic Research Society. I was the orthopaedic expert for the current NICE Osteoarthritis Guideline committee and I co-wrote the current UK NICE guidance on the treatment of osteoarthritis. I am chair of the Research Committee of the National Joint Registry for England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. I have sat on the research committee of the British Orthopaedic Association and as a board member of the Orthopaedic Research Society (USA) and chair of its Annual Meeting Programme Committee. I am a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Orthopaedic Research (USA). My research focuses on developing patient decision support tools that help patients make informed choices about joint replacement, the interaction between joint replacements and the patient, and the genes that cause arthritis.I receive grant support from the National Institute for Health Research, The British Medical Council, Health Data Research UK, The German Health Research Foundation, and the following charities Versus Arthritis, the Health Quality Improvement Partnership, The Cavendish Hip Foundation, and Weston Park Charity.
