Dr Mark Weatherall is a Consultant Neurologist at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust, former Chair of the British Association for the Study of Headache and Trustee of The Migraine Trust, President-Elect of the World Headache Society, and a member of the medical advisory board of the Trigeminal Neuralgia Association. He was a highly regarded historian of medicine before studying clinical medicine at Cambridge. Junior medical jobs followed in Cambridge, London and Oxford, before he completed his specialist training in neurology in the North-West of England. He spent twelve months as a clinical research fellow with Professor Peter Goadsby and Dr Holger Kaube of the Headache Group at the Institute of Neurology in London. He is a Fellow of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of London and Edinburgh. His interests include the diagnosis and management of chronic migraine, facial pain, visual snow and secondary headaches associated with systemic disorders, as well as the historical, social and cultural aspects of headache and facial pain disorders. He has made presentations on these subjects at meetings of the International Headache Society, the European Headache Federation, the Migraine Trust International Symposium, and the Association of British Neurologists. He led the development of the National Neurosciences Advisory Group’s optimal clinical pathway for patients with headache and facial pain, and actively promotes the importance of headache and facial pain disorders through social media and more traditional media platforms. Over the last 15 years he has pioneered the use of innovative and effective headache therapies such as Botox, occipital nerve blocks, the CGRP monoclonal antibodies, and most recently the ‘gepants’. He is also a highly experienced general neurologist of two decades’ standing, dealing with the diagnosis and management of blackouts and epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders, peripheral nerve and muscle disorders, CNS inflammatory disorders (such as multiple sclerosis), cognitive and memory disorders, and sleep issues. He was involved in the development of the co-ordinated pan-London stroke services in the early 2010s, and still works in the TIA service at Wycombe General Hospital. He has been actively involved in teaching and education throughout his career, providing targeted and detailed programmes for medical students, specialist neurology trainees, general practitioners, and pharmacists. His teaching style is informal and engaging, eliciting excellent feedback and regular requests for repeat sessions. This is reflected in his 2024 book Living with Headache , which provides accessible and reliable information on headaches for sufferers, carers, and medical practitioners.
