Dr Mark Thomas

Dr Mark Thomas has been a Consultant Nephrologist and Physician at Heartlands Hospital and the University Hospitals in Birmingham since 1998. He has had a research interest in acute kidney injury (AKI) and chronic kidney disease for some years. He was chief investigator for the Acute Kidney Outreach to Reduce Deterioration and Death (AKORDD) study, a large pilot study of AKI outreach. He is chief investigator of the forthcoming NURTuRE observational cohort biobanking and biomarker study of AKI for Kidney Research UK. He has chaired four guideline committees for NICE (including AKI, and anaemia management in CKD).  He is a co-author of Understanding Kidney Diseases, a Springer textbook whose third edition is due in late 2024.
