I was appointed in Gateshead in 2007. Over the past eleven years I have had a dedicated interest in the care of cancer patients. This has included my main role as surgical consultant but also for a substantial period of time in the position of colorectal cancer and MDT lead and latterly as the Trust Cancer Lead. Through these roles I have gained some understanding in the peer review processes, data collection, cancer waiting targets and in improving service provision pathways. At times this has required interaction with local NHS England as well as collaboration with surrounding clinical leads in adjacent trusts. My interest also includes service development, particularly new concepts and technologies but recognize the importance of clinical audit, training and governance issues surrounding new ideas and concepts. I have had recognised training roles in laparoscopic colorectal surgery previously with ALSGBI and subsequently LAPCO both as outreach and inreach preceptor models. Currently I sit on the programme, communications and guidelines committees of the European Society of Coloproctology with which I have been an active member since 2006.
