Mr Maninder Bhogal

Mani Bhogal is a multi-award winning Consultant Ophthalmologist and Researcher based a St Thomas’ Hospital London. He is an expert cataract, refractive and corneal transplant surgeon and has and specific expertise in complex lens surgery. He performs over 500 cataract and refractive procedures each year, including multifocal lens surgery, LASIK, ICL surgery. His patients value his comprehensive assessments with clear explanations and his calm, friendly demeanour during surgery.  Mr Bhogal is the only U.K. surgeon to have performed fellowship training in corneal, refractive and vitreoretinal surgery at two world recognised institutions (Moorfields’ Eye Hospital and Singapore National Eye Centre). He uses his unique surgical training to provide bespoke, cutting-edge care for patients requiring lens exchange/fixation surgery, iris repair and treating complications from previous surgery and trauma. Mr Bhogal was awarded the prestigious ‘Clinical Research Fellowship’ by the Medical Research Council, leading to the award of his PhD entitled “Improving outcomes in minimally invasive endothelial keratoplasty”, from University College London. His research has led to the development of new methods and techniques in corneal transplantation, many of which have been adopted widely in the U.K and abroad. He is a world leader in DMEK corneal transplantation and is on the scientific advisory board of Endothelial Keratoplasty learners Group, an organisation developed to help increase access to training in corneal transplant surgery, with over a 1000 members. He has a strong academic pedigree and has been awarded over a dozen awards and prizes including: The Crombie Medal for the best performance in the Royal College of Ophthalmologists fellowship examination  The Broderip and Atchison Prize for best overall performance in Medical School finals; University College London  Best Corneal Paper; American Academy of Ophthalmology   Only delegate to receive a perfect score in the Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology - Specialist Diploma in Cataract and Refractive Surgery  Alcon Glaucoma Studies Award  Twice winner of the United Kingdom and Ireland Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons video award  Mr Bhogal is a keen trainer and runs the regional cataract training programme for South London. He uses his passion for technology and photography to produce educational training videos and has developed technology to allow all trainees to record surgery using smart phones and use this for reflective practise.
