Mr Mahmoud A.M. Mohamed Elfar MBChB, MSc, MD, FRCS (Glasg), FRCS (Urol) is a Consultant Urological Surgeon at Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust with more than 30 years of experience in diagnosing and treating a wide range of urological conditions. He is committed to providing high-quality, personalised care, working closely with patients to ensure they fully understand their condition and treatment options. Mr Elfar graduated with Distinction and Honours from Alexandria University before completing a Master's Degree in Urology at Cairo University and an MD from Queen's University Belfast. He completed specialist urological training in both Egypt and the UK and advanced fellowships in urological oncology, endourology and minimally invasive surgery. He has been a Consultant Urological Surgeon in Liverpool since 2011. He manages both common and complex urological conditions in men and women. His specialist interests include recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs), kidney and ureteric stones, blood in the urine (haematuria), benign prostate enlargement (BPH), raised PSA, bladder symptoms, urinary retention, scrotal conditions, and cancers of the prostate, bladder, kidney and upper urinary tract. He has extensive experience in advanced endoscopic, laser and laparoscopic surgery, including transperineal prostate biopsy, laser treatment of bladder and upper urinary tract tumours, minimally invasive stone surgery, and kidney and bladder surgery. Wherever possible, he offers minimally invasive techniques to reduce recovery time, minimise discomfort and support an early return to normal activities. Alongside his clinical practice, Mr Elfar has played an important role in improving urological services across the NHS. He is a Committee Member and National Urology Expert for the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) Interventional Procedures Advisory Committee (IPAC), helping evaluate new procedures and technologies for use within the NHS. He previously chaired the Merseyside and Cheshire Urology Cancer Care Quality Group, leading improvements in prostate, bladder and kidney cancer pathways and helping deliver earlier diagnosis and more streamlined care across the region. Mr Elfar has a strong academic background and has published extensively in peer-reviewed medical journals. His research interests include prostate cancer, bladder cancer, kidney stone disease and innovative laser treatments in urology. He remains actively involved in teaching, training and mentoring the next generation of urologists. He is a member of the British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS), the European Association of Urology (EAU), the Endourological Society and the Société Internationale d'Urologie (SIU). Mr Elfar is dedicated to delivering safe, compassionate, evidence-based care, ensuring every patient receives an accurate diagnosis, clear communication and an individualised treatment plan aimed at achieving the best possible outcome.

Mr Elfar specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of a broad range of benign and malignant urological conditions in both men and women. His clinical interests include prostate, bladder, kidney and upper urinary tract cancers, providing comprehensive assessment, diagnosis and treatment using the latest evidence-based techniques. He has extensive expertise in the management of kidney and ureteric stones, including flexible ureteroscopy (URS/FURS), percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) and minimally invasive laser stone surgery. He also has a particular interest in recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs), haematuria (blood in the urine), bladder disorders, urinary retention and lower urinary tract symptoms. Mr Elfar regularly assesses and treats men with raised PSA levels and benign prostate enlargement (BPH), offering transperineal prostate biopsy, transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), laser treatments, plasma resection, UroLift® and other minimally invasive therapies where appropriate. His expertise includes advanced endoscopic, laparoscopic and laser surgery for both benign and cancerous conditions, including laser treatment of bladder and upper urinary tract tumours. He is committed to using minimally invasive techniques whenever possible to reduce discomfort, shorten recovery time and improve patient outcomes. In addition to his clinical practice, Mr Elfar is actively involved in the development of national standards of care through his role as a National Urology Expert on the NICE Interventional Procedures Advisory Committee (IPAC). He combines extensive surgical experience with a personalised approach, ensuring that every patient receives clear information, evidence-based treatment and care tailored to their individual needs
