Ms Lucia Pelosini MD FRCOphth is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust with a subspecialty interest in Cornea, External Diseases, Cataract and Refractive Surgery. Ms Pelosini qualified from Pisa University Medical School with Honours in 1999 and completed her ophthalmology training at the University of Pisa in 2004. She completed a Research Fellowship in Medical Retina under the supervision of Prof Alan C Bird at Moorfields Eye Hospital in 2002 and obtained an MD Research degree at the University of London, St Thomas’ Hospital NHS Trust, under the supervision of Prof Marshall in 2008. Ms Pelosini completed her higher surgical training in ophthalmology in the London South Thames Training Programme with a Fellowship in Cornea, Cataract and Refractive Surgery at the Western Eye Hospital, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust in 2012, she was first appointed as a Consultant with special interest in Cornea and Anterior Segment at Surrey & Sussex NHS Trust in Redhill in 2013 and then moved to King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in 2018. Ms Pelosini runs the Cornea and External diseases service at Queen Mary’s Hospital Sidcup-King's College Hospital Eye Department where she performs complex cataract surgery, secondary lens exchange and implantations, trauma repair, corneal grafts, management of keratoconus and expert management of ocular surface disease and infections. Since 2018, she has been the Supervising Consultant for the Rapid Access Service at Queen Mary’s Hospital Eye Department and the Consultant representative for King’s College South Sites at the MECS Group (Minor Eye Conditions Optometrists-led Service). Ms Pelosini is dedicated to the education and teaching of senior ophthalmology fellows, doctors in training, medical students, optometrists in training and general practitioners. She is a keen trainer for ophthalmic nurses and technical staff. She has been an and examiner for King’s College London Medical School since 2008. She has gained extensive research experience in centres of excellence such as Moorfields Eye Hospital and Kings College London University, she has authored over 20 peer-review publications and she is regularly invited to speak and moderate research sessions in national and international meetings.

Cornea, External Diseases, Cataract and Refractive Surgery The Cornea is the clear window of the eye and can be affected by viral or bacterial infections such as Herpes Simplex keratitis or contact lens infections, common conjunctivitis and allergic disease (Hayfever) of the eyes. External Diseases of the eye are all the conditions affecting the eyelids and surface of the eye such as dry eyes, blepharitis, conjunctivitis, allergic diseases, abnormal position of the eyelids, pterygium, infection of the eyelids such as chalazion (commonly called stye) and small skin lesions that may benefit from excision biopsy. Cataract is a cloudiness in the natural crystalline lens of the eye and can be treated with cataract surgery and lens implant. Miss Pelosini is a refractive cataract surgeon and offers cataract surgery with custom-made lenses for the correction of astigmatism, near vision, intermediate vision and distance vision, depending on the patient's needs and preferences. Refractive lens exchange is the surgery performed on the clear crystalline lens with a lens implant to correct the vision with custom-made lenses depending on the specific visual activites, hobbies and visual needs of each patient. Medical retina consultations, Intravitreal injections for macular degeneration, YAG laser and glaucoma: Retinal conditions such as diabetes, macular degeneration, vascular occlusions are diagnosed with the examination of the eye after dilating eyedrops and OCT scan of the macula Age-related macular degeneration is the most common cause of central vision loss after the age of 65 years. Intravitreal injections can halt the progression of wet AMD and can be performed in the outpatient clinic under local anesthetic. YAG laser capsulotomy is an outpatient procedure to clear the lens capsule and improve the vision after cataract surgery Glaucoma is a common condition of the optic nerve that can be diagnosed and monitored with annual OCT scans and visual field tests.
