Mr Joseph Nunoo-Mensah is a Consultant Colorectal and Laparoscopic/Robotic Surgeon with specialist expertise in colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, pelvic floor disorders and complex proctology, including the management of anal fistulae, haemorrhoids, fissures and other anorectal conditions. He holds consultant appointments at Cleveland Clinic London and King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, where he has worked as a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon since 2008. He has been Head of Colorectal Surgery at King’s College Hospital since 2018 and has played a leading role in colorectal cancer, anorectal physiology and pelvic floor services. His practice includes minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic colorectal surgery, alongside treatment for both benign and malignant colorectal disease. He has particular experience in complex colorectal and pelvic floor conditions and aims to provide the least invasive effective treatment wherever appropriate. Mr Nunoo-Mensah studied medicine at the University of Nottingham, graduating in Medicine and Surgery in 1993 after also completing a degree in Medical Science. His surgical training included posts at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford and higher specialist training in Manchester. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and obtained his Certificate of Completion of Training in General Surgery in 2008. He subsequently undertook advanced international fellowship training in laparoscopic colorectal surgery at the Mayo Clinic, Arizona, and specialist colorectal training at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. He also holds a Master of Laws (LLM) in the Legal Aspects of Medical Practice from Cardiff University. Alongside his clinical work, he is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at King’s College London and has a longstanding interest in surgical education, research and innovation. He has trained surgeons in the UK and internationally, including as a Clinical Instructor at the University of Southern California and as a trainer for the UK National Training Programme in Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery. Mr Nunoo-Mensah is Founder and Programme Director of the Dilemmas & Debates in Colorectal Surgery (DDCRS) conference. He served as President of the International Society of University Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ISUCRS) from 2022 to 2024 and is now Immediate Past President. He has published widely in colorectal surgery, contributed to surgical textbooks and regularly lectures at national and international meetings. His clinical approach emphasises clear communication, shared decision-making and ensuring patients understand both operative and non-operative treatment options.
