Dr Swinburn has been a Consultant Cardiologist at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading since 2006. He happy to see insured and self-funding patients from the Reading, West Berkshire and South Oxfordshire regions, and does not necessarily need a GP referral, unless your insurance company requires this. He started his medical training at Cambridge University in 1988 before moving to Charing Cross & Westminster Medical School in 1991, from where he qualified in 1994. His Cardiology training was conducted at hospitals in London, including the Royal Brompton Hospital, Harefield Hospital and the Royal Free Hospital. He conducted research on hypertension, heart failure, troponin measurement, echocardiography, myocardial perfusion imaging and stress echocardiography at Northwick Park Hospital and was awarded an MD by the University of London in 2003 for work on patients who have experienced a heart attack. He moved to Reading to bring up his (then) young family outside London. Until recently he was the Clinical Lead of the Cardiology Department of the Royal Berkshire Hospital, and is still the Catheter Laboratory Lead and Chief Clinical Information Officer, responsible for representing the views of clinical staff in technology decisions and implementation of IT solutions. He has a broad range of interests and experience, which he will draw on to thoroughly assess your cardiac status and will arrange any necessary investigations and treatment. He is fully trained in general cardiology, coronary angiography & angioplasty, echocardiography, cardiac pacing and complex cardiac device implantation. Investigations performed at Circle Reading include ECG recording, transthoracic echocardiography, ambulatory (Holter) ECG monitoring, ambulatory blood pressure monitoring and blood tests. He will take a holistic approach to your care and ensure you fully understand the relevant issues, so that you can be in control of your own health and wellness. He will also advise on strategies to reduce your risk of developing cardiovascular disease in the future. And, if you don’t have evidence of any serious cardiac problem, he will provide appropriate reassurance and try to alleviate any anxiety. Outside work Dr Swinburn enjoys cycling, cooking, travelling and trying, with limited success, to make the garden look respectable. He is also a trained coach.
