Dr Jonathan Dakin

Jonathan Dakin is a Consultant Respiratory Physician based at the Royal Surrey County Hospital, in Guildford.  He has a private practice at the Nuffield Guildford Hospital. Dr Dakin trained in Respiratory and Critical Care medicine in London, gaining a research fellowship at the Royal Brompton Hospital where he completed an MD doctoral degree within the National Heart and Lung Institute of Imperial College. He is also trained and experienced in Sleep Medicine, holding accreditation with the European Sleep Research Society as a Somnologist. Dr Dakin has exceptionally wide experience within Respiratory Medicine, having managed various specialist clinics including pulmonary infection, fibrosis / interstitial lung disease, home ventilatory support and Sleep Medicine.  A large part of Dr Dakin’s current practice is dealing with persistent cough and shortness of breath, particularly asthma.  He has co-authored a textbook for investigation of breathlessness, “Making sense of Lung Function,” in its second edition. He sees patients with all aspects of Respiratory disease, including asthma, lung cancer, respiratory infection, persistent cough, tuberculosis, COPD (chronic bronchitis / emphysema), interstitial lung disease, pulmonary fibrosis, pulmonary embolism and pulmonary hypertension. Dr Dakin aims to provide a gold standard of care for all respiratory patients.  He has a close team of high-calibre professionals, including Physiotherapists, a specialist nurse and Physiologists, who support his practice.  Where niche opinions are required, for certain subspecialty areas, Dr Dakin has a low threshold for referral to national and international experts, of which he has an excellent network. Initially appointed to a Consultant post at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth, he became Clinical Director of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine, before moving to a Consultant post at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in 2015, to be nearer to his family home in Farnham.  Dr Dakin has two children and is married to an Anaesthetist. At weekends he enjoys sailing a Laser dinghy (very badly) at a local sailing club, where he has previously served at the General Secretary.
