I qualified from the University of Liverpool with the degrees of MB ChB Honours, distinction in surgery and the Sir Robert Kelly Gold Medal. My postgraduate training was in Liverpool, London, and Leeds. The University of Liverpool awarded me the higher degree of Doctor of Medicine, MD, for a research thesis on diabetic complications. The Royal college of Physicians of London accredits me as a specialist in general internal medicine, diabetes, and endocrinology. I am a Fellow of the college, FRCP, and a London college examiner for the MRCP PACES examination. I am a consultant general physician at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals, with a special interest in diabetes. I am in current NHS and private consultant clinical practice. My duties include the assessment, diagnosis, and management of general medical in-patients. I manage out-patients and in-patients with complex diabetes, including tertiary referral cases. I provide specialist expert medical opinions and advice for, inter alia, the GMC, MPS, MDU, NHS Resolution, HM Coroners, and HM Government. The University of Leeds awarded me the title of Associate Clinical Professor by competitive application, based on my expertise in my field. I was included in 'Tatler' magazine's list of its top 250 UK doctors. I am the author of over 130 publications on diabetes, its complications, and related topics. I am actively engaged in research with international collaboration. I am on the steering group of the ASCEND study (a study on cardiovascular events in diabetes) and on the LENS trial (lowering events in non-proliferative retinopathy in Scotland), two large UK national clinical trials, based at Oxford University. I am the founder and clinical investigator of the Yorkshire Register of Children and Young Adults with Diabetes. This is internationally recognised as a source of important epidemiological data and has led to a series of peer-reviewed publications. I have served on the Council of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) and on ‘POGS’, the Panel that Oversees Guidelines and Statements of the EASD for Europe. I chaired one of the research grants committees of the European Foundation for the Study of Diabetes, EFSD, for three years, serving on that committee for four years.
