Mr John Leach

Mr Leach has over 15 years experience as a consultant neurosurgeon and has one of the busiest private neurosurgery practices in the North of England. He treats exclusively spinal conditions including neck and arm pain, back and leg pain, disc prolapse, stenosis and tumours. As well as managing common problems with the lumbar spine, Mr Leach has a particular interest in surgery on the cervical spine (neck) and also rare conditions such as spine tumours. In the NHS at Northern Care Alliance, Mr Leach was the sub-specialty lead for Spinal Neurosurgery in Manchester and is based at Salford Royal, one of the UK's busiest spinal specialist centres. He has been the driving force behind the increased use of spinal navigation for cases requiring spinal implants and increased use of intra-operative neuro-monitoring for selected high risk cases. Both of these technologies are aimed at making surgery safer for patients. Mr Leach has expertise in the management of intradural and intramedullary (spinal cord) tumours. Mr Leach has been Clinical Chair of the North West Regional Spinal Network and is a current Member of NHS England's Neurosurgery and Spinal Services Clinical Reference Group. Private practice is based at the OrthTeam Centre in Didsbury (next to Spire Manchester), Circle The Alexandra Hospital and Spire Manchester Hospital Mr Leach believes in a multi-disciplinary approach to spinal problems and most patient can experience improvement in symptoms without surgery after review of appropriate MRI scans. Non-surgical treatment may involve advice and education, physical therapies, steroid injections and pain management techniques in association with expert physiotherapists, sports and exercise doctors and consultant pain anaesthetists. When surgery is required, Mr Leach contributes to the British Spine Registry databases to monitor patient-reported outcomes. These databases demonstrate that Mr Leach's practice is associated with excellent outcomes from surgery with low complication rates and high rates of patient satisfaction. For example, patient reported outcomes for general health, back pain and leg pain are approximately one standard deviation better than national average (correct as of 2024, 450 patients).
