Professor Philip is the President Elect of the British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS). Joe works with the President, Trustees, Council and Executive team to deliver BAUS strategy programs focused on Education, Membership & Workforce. He was appointed Consultant Urological Surgeon at Bristol Urological Institute in 2011, after attending Medical College in Calicut, Southern India, and having his higher specialist Urology training in the Mersey region & Birmingham. Joe is a tertiary hospital specialist Endourological Surgeon with practice involving the management of complex stone patients, ureteric injuries and endoscopic upper tract urothelial cancer management. His research interests are in kidney stones disease and improving on differential attainment. His group looks into evaluating risk factors for sepsis, increased hospital stay and morbidity in patients who undergo stone procedures and outcomes of shockwave lithotripsy. Attempts at identifying risk factors for recurrence of stone disease, including with the use of Machine learning continue. Joe is passionate campaigner for Equity, to reduce differential attainment, improving on Diversity and Inclusion in Education, Representation and Leadership. He leads a research group evaluating In-equity, regulator bodies’ attitudes & differential language. He has reported on representation of females, ethnic minorities and doctors from disadvantaged backgrounds on National bodies, especially in Urology. As President of the International British Urology Society for the last 6 years (recently demitted), he has worked towards empowering younger colleagues. Joe has published over 40 papers and has lectured around the world. He is an International Professor with the Apollo Hospitals Educational & Research Foundation (AHERF), India; Honorary Professor of Urology at the School of Medicine, Bridgetown International University, Barbados and Honorary Associate Professor at the School of Engineering, Mathematics & Technology at the University of Bristol, U.K. In addition, he is also the endourology Section editor for the Journal of Clinical Urology and serves as a Trustee/Advisor on National Committees. He is also an Alumni of the prestigious The King’s Fund having undertaken the Strategic Clinical Leaders Programme. Professor Philip is the recipient of the 2026 Honorary membership of the Urology Society of India for work that has significantly advanced science and practice of urology, and whose efforts have strengthened bonds of academic collaboration and friendship across nations, the 2024 KAMS (UK) award for Outstanding contribution to the field of Urological Surgery & the 2023 APEX Healthcare Excellency Award for Excellence in Healthcare.

Urology - Endourology
Broad experience in general and diagnostic urology, which includes helping patients identify reasons for blood in urine, raised prostate blood test (PSA) levels, recurrent urinary infections and urinary flow problems. Specialist expertise in the minimally invasive treatment of kidney stones (endoscopic and percutaneous) and endoscopic upper tract urothelial cancer management.
