Dr Javaid Subhani

Dr Subhani studied medicine at Cambridge, having been awarded a Rolleston Scholarship to St. John's College. While there he also gained a BA in Genetics. After his Registrar rotation he spent five years in Senior Registrar training at the Royal Free and University College Hospitals. This was divided between a period of research in the genetic epidemiology of IBD, and stints on the Liver Transplant unit, the National Medical Laser Centre and the Pancreatobiliary unit. As an NHS consultant since 2001, Dr Subhani maintained his interest in general gastroenterology but developed the Liver Service at Basildon and Thurrock University Hospital, and then a medical pancreatology service. In 2007 he led the bid to develop the South Essex Bowel Cancer screening centre. He then held the role of Director of the Endoscopy and Bowel Cancer Screening Unit. He remains the designated therapeutic colonoscopist for the Colorectal cancer team. He has developed a regional reputation for endoscopy and has developed a tertiary service for complex colonoscopy, taking referrals from multiple hospitals from the East of England. This includes a specific interest in previously difficult or uncomfortable endoscopies with a high success rate in both patient acceptability and technical success. He has held a variety of posts including Medical Advisory Committee chair for the Nuffield Brentwood, Hepatology & Gastroenterology Lead at Basildon Hospital. Director of the Bowel cancer screening unit for South Essex.  Presently he is Clinical Director for Endoscopy at Basildon, Broomfield & Southend Hospitals, and Lead for Rapid Diagnostic Centre for Gastrointestinal Cancers. He has published and presented nationally and internationally on endoscopy, coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, nutrition and pancreatology.

While a general gastroenterologist with a broad range of expertise, as a result of services I have developed and delivered within the NHS, I have specific clinical interests in: Complex endoscopy including helping patients with previously uncomfortable or unsuccessful procedures, colrectal neoplasia and removing.
