James is a specialist knee surgeon with international recognition in ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) surgery, meniscus repair, and complex knee reconstruction. Based in Bristol and Bath, he is a founding partner of Knee Specialists — a group of high-volume, specialist knee surgeons providing expert diagnosis and treatment for knee injuries and conditions. Renowned for both his surgical skill and patient-centred approach, James takes time to understand each patient’s symptoms, lifestyle, and goals. He provides clear, tailored advice on the most appropriate treatment, whether surgical or non-surgical. His clinical interests include arthroscopic “keyhole” surgery, ligament reconstruction, partial knee replacement, cartilage and meniscus repair, and early arthritis management. James regularly receives referrals for complex cases from across the UK and has been invited to demonstrate surgery throughout Europe, Asia, and North America. Beyond his clinical practice, James plays an active role in advancing knee surgery worldwide. He serves as Co-Chairman of the Knee Sports and Preservation Committee for ISAKOS, sits on the scientific committee of the ACL Study Group, and previously chaired the Collateral Ligaments Working Group for ESSKA. He is a member of the Meniscus International Network, a reviewer for the American Journal of Sports Medicine , and serves on the steering committee for the UK National Ligament Registry. James trained in London and earned a Master of Surgery at Imperial College, focusing on medial collateral ligament biomechanics. His sub-specialty training included fellowships at Clinique du Sport in Bordeaux and the Avon Orthopaedic Centre in Bristol, where he became Consultant in Complex Knee Reconstruction. From 2016–2018, he undertook a sabbatical at the International Knee and Joint Centre in Abu Dhabi, further refining his sports knee expertise. A respected academic and educator, James has published over 80 papers and contributed to international surgical guidelines, including the ESSKA consensus on revision ACL surgery and the EU–US meniscus rehabilitation consensus. He has received multiple national and international awards, including the BASK President’s Medal and honours from the French and German Arthroscopy Societies. James is a sought-after international speaker on meniscus repair and ligament reconstruction, with recent lectures for the South African Orthopaedic Association, Dutch Arthroscopy Society, Norwegian Arthroscopy Society, and Danish Society for Arthroscopy and Sports Traumatology. Through international teaching and collaboration, James stays at the forefront of emerging evidence and innovation.
