His practice combines advanced fellowship training with evidence-based care and modern surgical techniques to help patients reduce pain, restore mobility and return to an active lifestyle. Based in Bath, Mr Berwin treats patients from Bristol, Somerset, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and across the South West. He offers comprehensive assessment, non-operative management and the latest advances in hip and knee replacement surgery, including MAKO robotic-assisted joint replacement. A strong advocate of personalised care, Mr Berwin believes treatment should be tailored to each individual's symptoms, lifestyle and goals. Every consultation includes a detailed clinical assessment with appropriate investigations, including X-rays, MRI or CT imaging where required, before discussing all suitable treatment options through shared decision-making. Mr Berwin completed advanced fellowship training in both the UK and Australia, developing specialist expertise in young adult hip surgery, hip preservation, complex primary and revision hip replacement, robotic joint replacement and orthopaedic trauma. His fellowship at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore, focused on complex hip disorders, while further fellowship training at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney, included MAKO robotic-assisted hip and knee replacement. Alongside his private practice, Mr Berwin is Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon and Orthopaedic Lead for Hip and Femur Fracture Care at the Royal United Hospital, Bath. Mr Berwin is actively involved in research, education and surgical training. Mr James Berwin specialises in treating a wide range of hip and knee conditions: Hip Conditions Mr Berwin treats patients with hip arthritis, hip dysplasia, femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), hip labral tears, Perthes disease, developmental hip deformities, sports-related hip injuries, early arthritis and persistent hip pain. Following fellowship training at the RNOH, Stanmore, he developed expertise in young adult hip surgery and hip preservation to relieve pain, preserve the natural hip joint and delay hip replacement. Hip Replacement and Revision Surgery Mr Berwin performs routine and complex primary hip replacement, cemented, uncemented and hybrid hip replacement, MAKO robotic-assisted hip replacement and Optimised Positioning System (OPS™) surgery. He also specialises in revision hip replacement for implant loosening, wear, instability, bone loss, prosthetic joint infection (PJI), periprosthetic fractures, acetabular reconstruction and complex revision surgery. Knee Surgery Mr Berwin treats knee arthritis, degenerative meniscal tears, failed knee replacements and periprosthetic fractures. He performs total knee replacement, partial knee replacement and MAKO robotic-assisted knee replacement to reduce pain and restore mobility. Robotic Joint Replacement Following MAKO robotic surgery training in Sydney, Mr Berwin offers robotic-assisted hip and knee replacement using personalised planning and accurate implant positioning. Complex Reconstruction and Orthopaedic Oncology Mr Berwin is one of the few fellowship-trained surgeons in the South West specialising in complications following hip and knee replacement, including periprosthetic fractures, prosthetic joint infection, single-stage revision surgery and complex joint reconstruction. He also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Orthopaedic Oncology and treats metastatic bone disease, impending and pathological fractures within multidisciplinary cancer teams, aiming to reduce pain, preserve mobility and improve quality of life.
