Mr Jack Gormley

I am a Consultant Eye Surgeon and the Head of Corneal & Refractive Surgery at York Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, and recognised as a leading authority in the region . I graduated with honors from the University of Leeds in 2009, and awarded the West Riding Prize for graduating top of my year. I completed eight years of specialist Ophthalmology training before focusing exclusively on corneal and refractive su rgery. I have pursued research interests in Malawi, Africa, with the University of Liverpool and Wellcome Trust, resulting in published work. My training includes fellowships at Leeds Teaching Hospitals, St. James’s Laser Vision, and a prestigious fellowship in Corneal and Refractive Surgery at St. Thomas’s Hospital London. In 2017, I achieved Certification in Laser Refractive Surgery from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (CertLRS), followed by a Diploma in Cataract and Refractive Surgery (University of Ulster) with distinction; I have now joined the teaching faculty and was recently awarded a Visiting Professorship. I am a member of the esteemed Microsurgical Skills Teaching faculty at the Royal College of Ophthalmologists where I contribute to training the next generation of surgeons.

My principal clinical interests lie in cataract and refractive surgery, with a particular focus on the use of premium intraocular lenses, including extended depth of focus (EDOF) and multifocal lenses. I am especially interested in achieving optimal refractive outcomes and maximising postoperative visual quality, tailoring lens selection to individual patient needs and lifestyles. This includes careful preoperative assessment, biometry optimisation, and the management of patient expectations to deliver high levels of spectacle independence. I regularly manage both routine and complex cataract cases, with an emphasis on precision surgery and excellent visual outcomes. In addition, I have a strong interest in corneal laser refractive surgery, including procedures such as LASIK, PRK, and SMILE. I am particularly focused on patient selection, the correction of refractive error with high accuracy, and the management of enhancement cases. My practice integrates modern diagnostic technologies and evidence-based approaches to optimise outcomes and minimise complications. Across both cataract and refractive surgery, I am committed to continuous refinement of surgical technique and the delivery of high-quality, patient-centred care.
