Mr Ian Botterill

I started my university career as a Vet Medicine student at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. Changing course after my first degree, I then completed my medical training in London and Manchester. I completed my Higher Surgical Training in Yorkshire, having previously undergone training in Manchester, Sheffield and Merseyside. In the final year of my training I was awarded the Medal by the Inter-Collegiate Board for my performance in the Final Fellowship examination. At the end of my training in Yorkshire, I undertook a placement in Copenhagen at the centre that first pioneered 'Enhanced recovery after colorectal surgery'. I have since always aimed to incorporate this into the care of my patients. I have been a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust since 2002. Leeds deals with a very diverse range of colorectal surgical cases, is one of the busiest UK colorectal centre based on colorectal cancers resected, and is undoubtedly the busiest based on emergency abdominal surgery. I deal with all colorectal conditions in the clinic setting and the emergency setting. In terms of diagnostic work-up for patients, I undertake gastroscopy, colonoscopy and flexible sigmoidoscopy. I carry out well in excess of the required 100 colonoscopies per year, with a completion rate of 96% and no adverse events. I carry out all major colorectal operations (with the exception of organ prolapse surgery) and have specialist operative expertise in large / complex abdominal wall hernias, inflammatory bowel disease, synchronous resection of patients with bowel cancer and liver metastases (spread to the liver), pilonidal sinus disease, radiation damaged bowel and management of patients who have short bowel syndrome. I report my bowel cancer outcomes via the National Bowel Cancer Audit programme (through the Association of Coloproctology). I am a member of three Multi-Disciplinary meetings that relate to my practice: Colorectal Cancer, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Intestinal Failure. I am one of three Medical Directors for Alliance Health Group, a nationwide organisation that provides private healthcare and additional insourced contracts for NHS organisations. I have formerly acted as Lead Clinician for Colorectal Surgery in Leeds, Chair of the Yorkshire Cancer Network (Colorectal Cancer), Chair of the Leeds Colorectal Cancer Multi-Disciplinary meeting. I am an experienced trainer in surgery and am frequently invited to speak at professional meetings on abdominal wall reconstruction. In terms of medicolegal work, I have acted as an expert witness in a variety of settings: Coroner's Court, advisory work for Spire Healthcare, the NHS indemnity bodies, private claimants and defence solicitors. I have three children, and in my precious spare time enjoy golf, cooking, dinghy sailing, cycling and watching Manchester City and international rugby.

As a specialist colorectal surgeon I undertake: - laparoscopic ('keyhole') colorectal surgery for colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease. - laparoscopic surgery for groin hernias. - surgery for haemorrhoids, anal fissures, anal fistulae, pilonidal sinus disease. - diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy. - diagnostic gastroscopy. Within the field of tertiary care i.e., teaching hospital, colorectal surgery I also have specific specialist interests in: - abdominal wall reconstruction for complex/large abdominal hernias. - surgery for complex inflammatory bowel disease - pilonidal sinus surgery. - management of radiation damaged bowel. - intestinal failure. - surgical management of synchronous colorectal cancer and liver metastases.
