Dr Hugh Gallagher

Hugh is a Consultant Nephrologist at Epsom and St Helier NHS Trust and a Visiting Professor in the Academic Unit of Primary Care and Population Sciences at the University of Southampton. He has a longstanding interest in Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and has led and participated in a number of large-scale CKD improvement projects funded by the Health Foundation. Hugh was the clinical lead for a successful bid to the Department of Health for a National Clinical Audit of CKD management in Primary Care and has made a significant contribution toward the development of national standards relevant to kidney disease, through his membership of several NICE Guideline Committees: CKD (2013-2014); Renal Replacement Therapy (2017-2018); Diabetes (2019-2021); Gout (2020-2021), Kidney Injury and Disease (co-opted member, 2020-2021); Hypertension and Cardiovascular Disease Prevention (2021-). He was also a member of the NICE Quality Standard Advisory Group for CKD, and served as Honorary Secretary of the British Renal Society between 2020 and 2021. He co-authored the 2017 National Renal Research Strategy and is currently leading a large (n=23000 patients) randomised clinical trial of aspirin for the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease in CKD funded by the National Institute of Health Research and British Heart Foundation.   He is a member of several professional and scientific committees and co-chairs the Kidney Health Partnership Board, where the major national kidney patient charities & professional organisations are represented alongside NHS England & Public Health England.  Hugh's areas of interest include quality improvement, hypertension and cardiovascular disease in CKD, renal disease in diabetes, and proteinuria.
