GMC reg: 4156266Henk Giele schooled and trained in Western Australia, did his Masters in Microsurgery at the Bernard O’Brien Institute of Microsurgery, University of Melbourne followed by surgical fellowships in Paris and Oxford. He has been a consultant hand and reconstructive plastic surgeon in Oxford since 1996. Henk’s interests are OrthoPlastics (microsurgical reconstruction after trauma, musculoskeletal infection, bone and soft tissue sarcoma) and hand surgery including congenital anomalies; brachial plexus and peripheral nerve deficits; trauma; and degenerative conditions. More recently, he has developed an interest in transplantation and has performed over 67 VCA (vascularised composite allograft) transplants (27 abdominal wall, 40 sentinel skin forearm flaps and 1 partial facial composite). Oxford and Leeds are contracted by NHSE to provide hand transplantation in the UK. As a full time clinician, his research interests are tied into his clinical interests including surgical innovation, clinical research into upper limb disorders management of sarcoma, cellular therapeutics particularly MSC’s and islets, normothermic perfusion of composite tissues, and transplantation of VCA. Henk is currently running a multi-centre RCT in sentinel skin flaps in lung transplantation, and one on CMCJ arthritis. He is a specialist advisor to the NICE new technology assessment committee, and an NHSE Clinical Entrepreneur. He is a past editor of Journal of Hand Surgery (European) and deputy editor of JPRAS. Henk Giele has published over 150 peer-reviewed articles, 20+ book chapters and a book, the Oxford Handbook of Plastic Reconstructive Surgery, the second edition of which is in press.
