Mr Harry Orlans is a multi-award winning consultant ophthalmologist with a special interest in vitreoretinal and cataract surgery based at the Lister Hospital, Stevenage, the New Queen Elizabeth II Hospital, Welwyn Garden City, and Pinehill Hospital, Hitchin. Alongside his general ophthalmic practice, he specialises in all aspects of vitreoretinal and cataract surgery including management of floaters, epiretinal membrane, macular hole, retinal detachment, vitreous haemorrhage and complex lens surgery. He graduated from the University of Cambridge with a first-class degree in Physiology, Development & Neuroscience, before completing his Clinical Medicine training with Distinction at the University of Oxford. He completed his Ophthalmic Specialist Training within the North London Deanery cumulating in clinical fellowships in Vitreoretinal Surgery at St Thomas' Hospital, London and Moorfields Eye Hospital, London. Mr Orlans also holds a DPhil (PhD) from the University of Oxford where his research focussed on pioneering treatments for inherited retinal diseases. He has been recognised for his clinical and academic work with numerous prestigious awards and prizes including the Crombie Medal by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, the Ruskell Medal by the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers, and the Founder's Cup by the Oxford Ophthalmological Congress. He has received research funding with a total value in excess of £1 million from the Medical Research Council, UK. Mr Orlans is an active contributor to clinical and scientific research within the fields of vitreoretinal surgery, ophthalmology and retinal science. He has authored numerous peer reviewed publications and currently serves as Regional Tutor for Ophthalmology and Medical School Examiner at the University of Cambridge.
