Dr Gowrie Shanker Balasubramaniam

I graduated from the University of Manchester with BSc (HONS) (2001) and MB ChB (2002). I obtained my MRCP in 2005 and my FRCP in 2019. I undertook senior house officer training in St George's Hospital and East Surrey Hospital, I did specialist training in Renal Medicine and General Medicine in the North Thames region including Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and Barts and The London NHS Trust. I was a NIHR Biomedical Research Fellow at Guys and St Thomas’ NHS Trust at the MRC Centre for Transplantation and received grants from the National Institute of Healthcare Research, Kidney Care UK and the East of England Network for research and quality improvement. I have been consultant in Nephrology in Mid and South Essex since 2013 and was Clinical Director from 2021 to 2025. I am Visiting Associate Professor at Anglia Ruskin Medical School since 2021.

With nearly 25 years of clinical experience — including 15 years specialising in personalised care for people with kidney disease, high blood pressure and related conditions — I provide comprehensive support across all aspects of kidney health. My clinical and research interests include acute and chronic kidney disease, high blood pressure, kidney stones and gout. I prioritise clear communication, collaborative treatment planning and long-term kidney health, taking a holistic approach that considers physical, psychological and lifestyle factors. I work closely with physiotherapists, psychologists, dietitians, GPs, and other hospital specialists to ensure care is coordinated and informed by the latest evidence. I regularly manage acute kidney injury and chronic kidney disease, with a focus on preventing deterioration. As the dialysis lead for the East of England Renal Network, and co-lead for the NIHR renal research delivery network in the region, I am committed to improving kidney care and raising awareness. I strive to make kidney health clearer and more accessible, empowering people to make better informed decisions about their care.
