Professor Faizel Osman

Professor Faizel Osman is Consultant Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist at University Hospital Coventry (UHCW) and BMI Meriden Coventry. He is head of Cardiac Arrhythmia Management at UHCW and was appointed to lead this new service for patients in Coventry and Warwickshire. He is also Honorary Professor of Cardiology with Warwick Medical School. Faizel qualified from University of Wales College of Medicine in 1995 with commendation. He was appointed to start and lead a new arrhythmia service for Coventry and Warwichshire in April 2008. He has extensive experience in cardiac device implants and cardiac electrophysiology and ablation. He also holds specialist accreditations from several organisations including Heart Rhythm UK, International Board of Heart Rhythm Examiners (US) and the European Heart Rhythm Association. He regularly speaks at courses for cardiologists in training. Prof Osman’s specialist interests include cardiac electrophysiology and ablation, implantable cardioverter defibrillators, cardiac resynchronisation therapy for symtomatic heart failure, permanent pacemaker implants, syncope and sudden cardiac death risk assessment. Medical & Surgical Training: His early training was at University Hospital Birmingham and he was awarded a British Heart Foundation Research Fellowship in Cardiology in 1999 with several high profile publications resulting from the research. He subsequently trained as specialist registrar in cardiology within the West Midlands region and sub-specialist training in arrhythmia management (cardiac electrophysiology and device therapy) at University Hospital Birmingham, University Hospital of North Staffordshire and University Hospital Leicester (Glenfield). He was appointed Honorary Professor of Cardiology at Warwick Medical School in August 2018 and is active in cardiology research. Cardiac Electrophysiology (EP) and ablation EP testing helps diagnose abnormal heart rhythms and identifies areas of the heart that may be affected. A cardiologist (called an electrophysiologist) guides catheters (with electrodes at the tip) into the heart using x-ray imaging and stimulates the heart to test for abnormal heart rhythms. If an abnormal heart rhythm is provoked, the area in the heart responsible for it can be identified and a controlled burn (ablation) of the abnormal tissue can permanently cure the problem. A new form of ablation treatment can be used to attempt to cure Atrial fibrillation (AF) in certain patients. Permanent pacemaker implantation: A pacemaker is a small surgically implanted device that controls the heart’s rhythm when it is too slow. Implantation normally requires a small incision only and takes less than an hour to complete. Patients are reviewed at the pacing clinic to ensure the pacemaker is functioning well. Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD): Certain patients who have experienced a previous cardiac arrest or who are deemed at high risk of a future cardiac arrest may benefit from an ICD. These devices are implanted in a similar way to a pacemaker. Cardiac Resynchronisation Therapy (CRT) devices: CRT has been shown to be beneficial for selected patients with heart failure, to improve symptoms and quality of life. It is performed in a similar way to an ordinary pacemaker implant, but involves placing pacing wires to the right and left sides of the heart to improve the overall heart pump function. Often an ICD is incorporated into the CRT device.
