Mr Faisal Ahmed

Faisal Ahmed is Head of Specialty at Imperial College Ophthalmology and Honorary Senior Lecturer at Imperial College, London and is a senior Ophthalmic Consultant Surgeon specializing in glaucoma and cataract surgery.  Faisal is a surgical innovator and was the first in the world to use a new glaucoma drainage device - the Eyeplate, among the first in Europe to use the new Glaucoma MINIject device and has published new surgical techniques and was among the first in Europe to use a new premium intra-ocular lens in cataract surgery (Hoya Impress). In addition he devised a novel training surgical simulation model which is used as the standard training model worldwide. Faisal is regularly invited to speak and chair at national and international specialty meetings and conferences.  In addition, Faisal is actively involved in teaching surgeons the latest techniques and has regularly been a faculty member at national and international courses. Surgeons from abroad not only visit Faisal on observerships but also apply for formal training fellowships. He was a trainee and glaucoma research fellow at Moorfields Eye Hospital and undertook a clinical glaucoma fellowship at the Western Eye Hospital.  His papers are regularly published in scientific journals and he is also an author on new glaucoma surgeries on the national Royal College of Ophthalmology UK award winning NHS e-learning website. And has won prizes nationally. Faisal was the national coordinator for World Glaucoma Day for 2 years. And is a member of the European Glaucoma Society and International Society of Glaucoma surgery. He has been a longstanding volunteer a UK based charity : Humanity First and is involved in providing eye care in West and East Africa by sponsoring local cataract camps and training of ophthalmic staff.  He started running last year and has just completed his first London marathon.

Faisal is one of the leading eye surgeons in the UK performing highly complex glaucoma and cataract surgery. He is the first surgeon in the world to use a new glaucoma device called the EyePlate, and is one of the first UK surgeons to use the latest minimially invasive glaucoma device the iSTAR MINIject. Faisal performs bespoke cataract surgery using the latest intra-ocular lenses that reduce the need for spectacle use. Faisal is a very experienced glaucoma surgeon and was one of the very few glaucoma consultants in the UK operating through the Covid-19 lockdowns on the highest risk glaucoma patients. Faisal performs glaucoma laser, standalone glaucoma procedures and combined cataract and glaucoma procedures as well as laser  YAG capsulotomies.
