Professor Ewen Griffiths

Professor Ewen Griffiths is a Consultant Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust and Honorary Professor at the Institute of Immunology and Immunotherapy, University of Birmingham. He qualified in Medicine from the University of Dundee in 2000, obtained his MD from the University of Manchester in 2006, and completed higher surgical training across the North West of England before undertaking a Senior Upper Gastrointestinal Fellowship at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, Australia. He gained his FRCS in 2010 and was appointed Consultant in Birmingham in 2012. His clinical practice spans oesophagogastric cancer surgery, hiatal and reflux surgery, biliary surgery, and therapeutic endoscopy, alongside a emergency general surgery commitment. He is the Upper GI Cancer MDT and Upper GI Research Lead at UHB and was a previous chair of the West Midlands Upper GI Cancer Expert Advisory Group. Professor Griffiths is an internationally recognised clinical researcher. He was Chief Investigator for the Oesophago-Gastric Anastomosis Audit (OGAA), one of the largest international collaborative studies in oesophageal surgery, and joint Chief Investigator for the CholeS study, which recruited almost 9,000 patients across 167 hospitals. He is currently Joint Chief Investigator for the GECKO project, a global study of cholecystectomy outcomes, and a co-applicant on the NIHR-funded SUNFLOWER trial. He has authored well over one hundred peer-reviewed publications, including papers in the Lancet, Annals of Surgery, British Journal of Surgery and Journal of Clinical Oncology, together with numerous book chapters. He holds numerous national and international leadership roles, including Secretary of the British Oesophageal Group and Co-Chair of the ISDE Guidelines Development Committee. He serves on the editorial boards of BJS, BJS Open and Foregut, and peer reviews for many leading surgical journals. A committed educator, Professor Griffiths supervises PhD, MSc and BSc research students at the University of Birmingham, mentors international ANZGOSA surgical fellows, and organises regional courses in laparoscopic and oesophagogastric surgery.
