Mr Eoin Guerin

I have been an NHS consultant ophthalmologist for 12 years based at the Stanley Eye Unit, Abergele Hospital, North Wales. After qualifying in medicine from the National University of Ireland I undertook the bulk of my ophthalmology training at Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham followed by a fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital. I also have undertaken research into age related macular degeneration in the Universities of Liverpool, UK and Florida, USA for which I was awarded a medical doctorate. In my clinical practice I perform cataract surgery, vitreoretinal surgery and support the macular treatment service. In the macular service I have performed thousands of eye injections for treatment of retinal diseases such as age related macular degeneration. I am referred complex cataract cases from across North Wales which require my vitreoretinal expertise. Internationally I have worked as a consultant in New Zealand. There I gained experience in an area with a deprived population requiring complex surgical intervention to treat advanced diabetic eye disease. I have held the position of clinical lead for all North Wales NHS Ophthalmic services during the Coronavirus pandemic. I successfully maintained services during that difficult time and introduced a number of service improvments. I am in charge of training for regional ophthalmic trainees. I have performed over 2000 cataract operations and over 500 vitreoretinal operations over the last 13 years. Vitreoretinal operations include macular hole closures, diabetic eye surgery, retinal membrane peels and retinal detachment repairs. I have also performed thousands of eye injections for age related macular degeneration and other conditions.
