Dr Elaine Chan

Dr Elaine Chan was trained at Guy's Hospital Medical School (part of United Medical Schools of Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals). During her training, she also obtained a BSc in Psychology (Upper II, University of London). Following graduation, she continued her paediatric/respiratory training in London/Sussex. She did her postgraduate research at Royal London Hospital (MD degree) on diagnostic accuracy of tests for asthma, before completing her respiratory fellowship at Toronto Sickkids Hospital. She has been a consultant Respiratory Paediatrician for 17 years, contributing to the growth and successes of 2 respiratory units, Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital (RMCH) and Great Ormond St hospital (GOSH). She is working as a Consultant Respiratory Paediatrician at GOSH (2014 - ) and also Honorary Associate Professor at the Institute of Child Health, London. Her subspecialty interests are sleep medicine and long term ventilation. She is the clinical lead in Non-invasive Ventilation service and Respiratory service. Dr Chan has an active research portfolio with annual output of publications (book chapters and peer-reviewed papers, main area of interest in Long term ventilation). She has a track record of grant awards including GOSH Charity CRSG grant funded study ‘Adherence to long term NIV in children and young people’ (2019-2021); NIHR funded study: ‘Developing and testing a Toolkit of Interventions to improve Adherence to NIV in Children’ (Jan 2023 -). Dr Chan is also enthused about education and training, having been the course director for the annual paediatric long term ventilation course at GOSH since 2015, welcoming delegates from the UK and abroad. Beyond her work base, she served as a member of BTS (British Thoracic Society) guideline group previously and more recently, she has been involved in NCEPOD national long term ventilation survey (2019) and was a member of the ERS (European Respiratory Society) paediatric non-invasive respiratory support taskforce (2019-2021). She is an active member of the Pan-London long term ventilation (LTV) network, helping to shape the policy and care of home ventilated children and recently appointed as the North Thames Paediatric Network clinical lead for LTV (2024).
