Mr Edward Caruana is a Consultant Thoracic Surgeon at Glenfield Hospital, University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, and holds an Honorary Lectureship at the University of Leicester. He runs NHS clinics at Peterborough City Hospital and Queen's Hospital Burton. He sees private patients at Glenfield Hospital in Leicester, The Park Hospital in Nottingham and The Meriden Hospital in Coventry, as well as by video and telephone. He qualified in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Malta and completed specialist cardiothoracic surgical training in Cambridge, Nottingham, and Leicester. He undertook a fellowship in single-incision keyhole thoracic surgery at Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital in China, a high-volume international centre for minimally invasive thoracic surgery, and holds a postgraduate diploma in Surgical Innovation from Imperial College London. Mr Caruana is Undergraduate Lead for Thoracic Surgery at the University of Leicester, where he established a dedicated teaching programme in Thoracic Surgical Oncology in 2023; and holds a postgraduate diploma in Medical Education from the University of Dundee. He chairs the Diaphragm Working Group of the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland, and the Pleural Disease Working Group of the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons. He has published more than 60 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters, and contributed to the ERS/ESTS clinical practice guideline on fitness for curative-intent treatment of lung cancer.

Diaphragm disorders. Breathlessness caused by a raised, weak or paralysed diaphragm. Mr Caruana offers structured diagnosis, assessment, and both conservative and surgical management, including diaphragm plication. He chairs the Diaphragm Working Group of the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland. Pleural disease. Pneumothorax (collapsed lung), pleural effusion and pleural tumours. He chairs the Pleural Disease Working Group of the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons and sits on the committee of the UK Pleural Society. Lung nodules, lung cancer and metastatic disease. Small or uncertain lung nodules, including diagnosis and surgical marking with Ion robotic bronchoscopy, and surgery for lung cancer and cancer that has spread to the lung. Chest wall pain and injury. Rib fractures, post-surgical chest pain, and nerve-related chest pain. Additional areas of practice. Thymoma and other mediastinal masses, including retrosternal goitre. Chest wall tumours. Pericardial effusion. Emphysema, including lung volume reduction (surgery and endobronchial valves). Narrowing or blockage of the airways, from both cancer and non-cancer causes. Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis).
