Mr Edward Calleja is a Consultant Urological Surgeon and robotic pelvic cancer surgeon specialising in the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer , bladder cancer and benign enlarged prostate (BPH) . His practice focuses on robotic radical prostatectomy , robotic radical cystectomy , and Aquablation therapy for enlarged prostate. Based in Sussex, he provides specialist care for NHS and private patients across Eastbourne, Brighton, Hastings, Kent and the South East. He is Clinical Lead for Urology and Cancer Lead at East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, where he leads service development, innovation and quality improvement in urological cancer care. After graduating from the University of Malta , Mr Calleja completed specialist urology training in the United Kingdom before developing an advanced practice in pelvic uro-oncology . His approach combines evidence-based medicine with the latest robotic surgical techniques to achieve excellent cancer control while preserving urinary continence, erectile function where appropriate and overall quality of life. Mr Calleja has performed over 700 robotic radical prostatectomies and has extensive experience in complex robotic pelvic cancer surgery. He has introduced several innovations in robotic urology within Sussex, including one of the region’s first day-case robotic radical prostatectomy programmes, ultra-low pressure robotic surgery , and enhanced recovery pathways that have significantly reduced hospital stay following major robotic bladder cancer surgery. His work focuses on improving both clinical outcomes and the patient experience. In addition to robotic cancer surgery, Mr Calleja specialises in the investigation and treatment of raised PSA , blood in the urine (haematuria) , recurrent urinary tract infections , prostatitis , chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CPPS) , male lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and benign enlarged prostate , including Aquablation therapy . He also provides expert second opinions and personalised treatment plans for patients with complex urological conditions. Alongside his clinical practice, Mr Calleja is actively involved in research, surgical education and service development. He teaches junior doctors and robotic surgery fellows, presents nationally and internationally, and contributes to research in robotic surgery, prostate cancer outcomes, enhanced recovery and antibiotic stewardship.
