GMC reg: 4771232Professor Ying Cheong is an internationally recognised leader in reproductive medicine and gynaecology, with over 25 years of clinical and academic experience. Known for her compassionate, science-driven approach, she specialises in fertility care, early pregnancy loss, complex gynaecological conditions, and reproductive surgery. Her clinical work is anchored in evidence-based practice, innovation, and a deep understanding of her patients' personal journeys. She brings clarity and expertise to even the most complex cases, always with empathy and integrity. Innovation and Enterprise Professor Cheong is co-founder of Verso Biosense , a University of Southampton spin-out company developing the world’s first intra-uterine biosensor to monitor uterine health in real-time. Based at the Oxford Innovation Park, the project brings clinicians, engineers, and data scientists together to understand the reproductive environment better. As Associate Dean for Enterprise at the University of Southampton (2020–2022), she initiated the award-winning “Clinician Meets Engineer” programme, connecting medical and technical experts to drive cross-disciplinary solutions, from AI-based diagnostics to wearable fetal monitoring devices. Leadership and Advisory Roles Professor Cheong plays a key role in shaping national and international reproductive health policy. She is a: Member of the HFEA Scientific and Clinical Advances Advisory Committee Past Co-ordinator of the ESHRE Reproductive Endocrinology Special Interest Group Contributor to FIGO , ESHRE , and ESGO global guidelines Medical advisor to the UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) Expert advisor to NHS clinical commissioning groups on fertility services She has chaired or served on steering committees for landmark reproductive health trials, including HABSelect , GEM3 , UCON , and ALIFE2. She supports research excellence through grant reviews for the NIHR , MRC , and Wellbeing of Women . Education and Mentorship Professor Cheong is dedicated to educating the next generation of doctors, scientists, and fertility specialists. She is: Lead for Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Southampton Medical School Training Programme Director for Reproductive Medicine (Wessex Deanery) External examiner for MSc, MD, and PhD programmes in Hong Kong, Ireland, and Norway Certified GMC appraiser and educational supervisor in postgraduate medical education She regularly supervises PhD and MD students and has examined doctoral theses worldwide. She has also authored chapters in primary clinical textbooks, including Gynaecology by Ten Teachers and Obstetrics and Gynaecology: An Evidence-Based Text for MRCOG . Medico-Legal Expertise With over 15 years of medico-legal experience, Professor Cheong provides expert reports and testimony in legal cases related to fertility, early pregnancy care, gynaecological surgery, and clinical negligence. Professor Cheong is a Consultant Gynaecologist and the founding Medical Director of the Complete Fertility Centre , an IVF and fertility treatment unit based in Southampton. Since opening in 2008, the centre has provided over 500 IVF cycles annually and is a key resource for NHS and private fertility services across the South of England. She offers expert care in: General Fertility Advice Recurrent Miscarriage and Pregnancy Loss Endometriosis, Pelvic Pain, and Adhesions Minimally Invasive Reproductive Surgery Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) Uterine Fibroids and Menstrual Disorders Menopause She also leads the regional Recurrent Pregnancy Loss Clinic and performs advanced fertility surgeries at University Hospital Southampton. Academic and Research Roles Professor Cheong holds a Chair in Reproductive Medicine at the University of Southampton , where she co-leads the Development, Physiology and Medicine research group—her research centres on the endometrium—particularly how conditions like endometriosis and pelvic adhesions impact embryo implantation. Her innovative collaborations across engineering, computer science, and nanomedicine have resulted in breakthroughs in biosensor technology and nano-therapeutics for reproductive health. She has published more than 200 scientific papers, book chapters, and clinical guidelines, and sits on the editorial boards of multiple leading journals including Human Fertility , Reproduction and Fertility , and Scientific Reports (Nature Publishing Group). She is an Emeritus Editor of the Cochrane Menstrual Disorders and Subfertility Group . Her global research partnerships include institutions in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
