Dr Sampath De Silva

Dr Sampath De Silva is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist at Ashford and St Peter’s NHS trust. He manages patients with gastroenterological conditions and is and accomplished endoscopist frequently undertaking both upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy procedures. He is currently the Clinical Lead for the Endoscopy Department at Ashford and St Peter's NHS trust. In addition to general gastroenterology he also has a special interest in liver disease (hepatology).  He completed his undergraduate training at St George’s, University of London. Subsequently, he trained in London and the South East. As part of his advanced gastroenterology training he worked at the Gastroenterology units at the Royal London Hospital and King’s College Hospital, and at the Liver transplant unit at the Royal Free Hospital. Whilst working at the Liver unit at the Royal London Hospital he undertook clinical research into viral liver disease. He was awarded a PhD (from Queen Mary, University of London) for this work in 2019. He has authored medical journal articles and has presented his work at local and national meetings. He has developed the hepatology service at St Peter’s Hospital, in particular with regards to the management of advanced liver disease and viral hepatitis. He was selected as Clinical Team Member of the year at Ashford and St Peter’s NHS trust in 2021 by his peers in recognition of this work.  He used to be endoscopy training lead in both upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy. He supervises the training of junior doctors in gastroenterology at Ashford and St Peter’s NHS trust and is an honorary lecturer in the department of Biological Sciences at the Royal Holloway, University of London.

1. Gastroenterology: Gastro-oesophageal reflux, Indigestion, heartburn, bloating, coeliac disease, change in bowel habit, inflammatory bowel disease, abnormal imaging of the gastrointestinal tract or liver. 2. Endoscopy: Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy (gastroscopy), Lower gastrointestinal endoscopy (flexible sigmoidoscopy/colonoscopy, including polypectomy). 3. Liver disease: Abnormal liver function tests, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, liver cirrhosis, viral liver disease, autoimmune liver disease (including autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cholangitis and primary sclerosing cholangitis).
