Dr Paul Dewart is a Senior Gynaecologist with over 24 years clinical experience as a Consultant who practises both privately and in the NHS. In the Private Sector he practises at the Spire Murrayfield Hospital and the Spire Shawfair Park Hospital in Edinburgh. He has recently set up the Spire Edinburgh BSGE Aspiring Endometriosis Centre. He has developed special interest and expertise in the management of pelvic pain, menstrual dysfunction, hysteroscopic and laparoscopic 'keyhole' surgery for endometriosis and ovarian cysts and adhesions, treatment of prolapse, vaginal hysterectomy and pelvic floor repair, vulval disease, open abdominal surgery including hysterectomy and myomectomy. Dr Dewart works closely and communicates effectively with gynae-oncology cancer, colorectal and urogynaecological colleagues to make sure his patients receive the best possible care.
He works part-time in the NHS at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, St John's Hospital Livingston, Chalmers Sexual Health Clinic and Roodlands Hospital in Haddington. He was Clinical Director for Gynaecology for NHS Lothian at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh from 2011 to 2014, he currently works in the NHS as part of the Edinburgh EXPPECT Endometriosis Team (He was BSGE accredited Endometriosis Surgeon in 2018 at the RIE and is now BSGE Endometriosis Surgeon at Spire Edinburgh Aspiring Endometriosis Centre), he has a menstrual dysfunction and outpatient hysteroscopy clinic at St John's Hospital, he undertakes regional gynae vulval skins clinics at the RIE, he has a pelvic pain and endometriosis clinic at St John's. At Roodlands he has a general gynae clinic seeing women with prolapse, urinary problems, menstrual dysfunction, pelvic pain, vulval disease, vaginal discharge, fibroids, endometriosis and post-menopausal bleeding.
Dr Dewart was very involved in the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Health from 1996 to 2011, he was Treasurer of the Faculty from 2008 to 2011. During his time at the Faculty he developed a special interest in reproductive medicine, including contraception and hormone replacement therapy.
Dr Dewart was a Research Fellow at the MRC Centre for Reproductive Biology where he undertook research on GnRH agonists and was awarded an MD. He is an expert in the hormonal management of gynaecological conditions such as menstrual dysfunction, pelvic pain and endometriosis.
Dr Dewart most enjoys spending time with his family and friends. He works closely with his wife who is the Specialist Nurse at the Endometriosis and Pelvic Pain Clinics in Edinburgh. He is very proud of his 2 children and is very excited at the prospect of his first grandson who is expected in May 2019. He enjoys playing golf with his son and he always looks forward to trips out and holidays with the family. He loves walking his dog Franky, a golden retriever, especially on a nice sunny day !
