Dr Nick Sharer

Dr Sharer qualified from Southampton University Medical School in 1986. After junior doctors posts in Portsmouth he moved to be a registrar at The Freeman Hospital in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in what is now a regional liver transplantation center. His training then took him to Manchester to be the Medical Coordinator of the Pancreato-Biliary Unit at the Royal Infirmary, before moving back to the south coast when he was appointed as Consultant Physician and Gastroenterologist at Poole Hospital in 1996 .

As a consultant Gastroenterologist Dr Sharer specializes in diseases of the GI tract and the endoscopic techniques required in diagnosing and treating conditions as varied as oesophageal strictures, peptic ulcers, coeliac disease and inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis). His research interests have been related to pancreatic and liver disease. He is a member of British Association of Study of the Liver (BASL) and has chaired the local Regional HPB (Hepato-Pancreatic Biliary) cancer and nutrition multi-disciplinary teams. Prior to studying to be a doctor he was a research biochemist and utilizes this expertise in leading the Poole Nutrition Steering Group. As a liver and pancreas doctor many of his patients suffer from the effects of alcohol excess. Dr Sharer's role as clinical lead of the highly acclaimed Poole Hospital Alcohol Care and Treatment Service (ACTS), allows a team approach to helping this type of problem.
