GMC reg: 4719771Dr Neil Ikin is a Consultant Gastroenterologist at Ashford and St Peter’s NHS Trust. He cares for patients with gastroenterological conditions, with a special focus on stomach and bowel problems, in particular those with functional and inflammatory bowel disease. Having graduated from St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical School he undertook junior doctor training in both East and West London, working and studying at many world-renowned centres such as St Mark’s Hospital in Harrow and Imperial College. This experience has shaped his medical practice to this day. During this period, he became proficient in upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy, oesophageal manometry and lower GI tract physiology. Having been Clinical Lead for Gastroenterology in recent years, he now leads the upper GI Physiology and Functional Gut Services at Ashford and St Peter’s Hospital, key aspects of his work in Neurogastroenterology. In addition, he is a core member of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease and a member of the Upper GI Cancer Multi-Disciplinary Teams. He has supported junior colleagues throughout his career, becoming a specialist registrar training programme director and a JAG certified endoscopy trainer, a role he still enjoys currently. More latterly he has taken on responsibility for training and supervising colleagues in Upper Gastrointestinal Physiology and is also a supervisor for groups of Imperial College and St Georges Medical School students as they rotate through the hospital.

I have a special clinical interest in caring for those with disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI) and functional gastrointestinal disease in general. I have a particular interest in patients with difficulty swallowing (Dysphagia), or painful swallowing (Odynophagia). A further special interest is helping patients with chronic constipation and those with faecal incontinence. I also specialise in the care of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), such as ulcerative colitis (UC), Crohn's Disease (CD) and microscopic colitis. From a wider gastrointestinal perspective I also have a special interest in abnormal liver function testing and chronic liver disease.
