Dr John Martin

John graduated from Girton College, Cambridge and King’s College Hospital, London in 1990 and completed his gastroenterology training within North West London. He is now a senior Consultant in gastroenterology, with 16 years experience of managing all aspects of gastroenterology including abdominal pain or discomfort, reflux disease, diarrhoea and constipation, rectal bleeding, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. John is an expert in colorectal cancer screening and was responsible for running the Mark’s Hospital centre within a large clinical trial to assess a new model of colon cancer screening. The results of this trial initiated the adoption of Bowel Scope screening within the National Bowel Cancer Screening programme. During this time he also conducted research into novel, non-invasive methods for colorectal cancer screening, and was awarded an M.D. for his thesis by London University in 2002. John is Director of the West London Bowel Cancer Screening Centre, which delivers colon cancer screening a local population of 1 million people. He is a professional advisor to Public Health England on the quality and safety of Bowel Cancer Screening within London and is a member of the national advisory committee on quality and safety of screening endoscopy. John is an expert diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopist, and is experienced in the assessment and removal of large benign polyps from the colon. He is passionate about teaching and is regularly invited as faculty to National Training centres, teaching junior endoscopists and also providing upskilling teaching to experienced endoscopists in both colonoscopy and polypectomy.
