Trained at Christ's College Cambridge and St Thomas Hospital London, gastroenterology specialist training West Midlands. PhD from Birmingham University in mucosal immunology. I am a luminal gastroenterologist in a tertiary regional teaching hospital on a large biomedical science campus and University Medical School, specialising in nutrition support, Coeliac Disease, Intestinal failure and Multivisceral transplantation. Establishment and lead clinician of a regional specialist centre for nutrition support and intestinal failure from 2002 until 2018. Lead clinician for nutrition in Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (co-chair nutrition steering group). Departmental lead clinician for Quality and Safety 2019. Core member of NERG (Need for nutrition Education Review Group). Founder chairman of Anglia Nutrition Network. Eastern region gastroenterology trainer – 2010-2017. Member of British Society of Gastroenterology Small Bowel and Nutrition committee. Member of Department of Health HIFNET committee 2007-2011. Member of the Royal College of Physicians Nutrition Committee. Member of the British Intestinal Failure Alliance committee. Member of Coeliac UK Research Strategy Board 2017. Member of NICE clinical guideline development group for Coeliac Disease 2015-6. Co-founder of the Refractory Coeliac Disease UK Rare Disease Collaborative Network 2018. Associate editor BMJ Nutrition, Prevention and Health, 2018. I run a dedicated tertiary Coeliac clinic which is one of two centres in the National Rare Disease Collaborative Network. I established a tertiary pancreatic disease clinic and provide a regional pancreatic ERCP service including duodenal polypectomy and ampullectomy. I established one of the largest regional intestinal failure and home parenteral nutrition services in the UK and support the national intestinal and multivisceral transplant service. My endoscopy clinical practice includes gastroscopy, colonoscopy, ERCP, video capsule enteroscopy. Research interests include intestinal failure associated liver disease, intestinal transplantation, gastrointestinal complications of immunodeficiency, and coeliac disease. I teach undergraduate physiology and lecture in postgraduate clinical medicine in Cambridge University and the University Medical School. I work as a medical expert witness in general gastroenterology for medical negligence, the coroner’s court and the court of protection.
