GMC reg: 4514835If you are looking at my profile, you are likely to be going through one of the most challenging times of your life. You will have been given a diagnosis that may be frightening, leaving you scared and confused. You may want certainty where there appears to be little or none. This will be an association that will last some time and I see my main role as being there to help you navigate through this sometimes bewildering and frightening time. I am interested in knowing you, and what matters most to you, so that we can make the best decisions, about your care, with your full involvement. My maxim is ‘compassionate honesty’, so you always know where you stand, and so you can trust what I say. It is my core aim to make the treatment process as understandable as possible, and to answer each question you have. I will formulate a plan with you, so you can be as secure as possible, knowing that you are being cared for by me, and a support team, who want to get it right for you each step of the way. I am a locally trained Medical Oncologist, specialising in the medical treatment of Breast cancer, currently working at Harrogate District Hospital. I have more than 20 years of experience in Oncology (cancer medicine), with over a decade of that time as a consultant. I have a PhD, am active in clinical research, and have a strong interest in communication; acting as a facilitator on a nationally delivered training programme (TRUSTING) and contributing to an international training programme to help cancer professionals to explain risk more effectively (TARGET). My approach has been validated by my patients, winning the Mid Yorkshire NHS Trust 'Kate Granger Compassionate Care Award' in 2018, and a patient nominated ‘Making a Difference’ award at Harrogate in 2022.
Medical oncology
I specialise in the treatment of Breast cancer including treatment before and after surgery, and in the setting of advanced disease. I have expertise in prescribing immunotherapy, hormone, antibody, biological (targeted) and chemotherapy based treatments, along with the supportive medication that helps to make treatments manageable. I have an interest in the importance of communication in cancer care, including involvement in research and delivering training.
