GMC reg: 4198455Dr James Wilkinson BSc (Hons), MB BS, PhD, FRCP is a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at University Hospital Southampton and a visiting consultant at Lymington New Forest Hospital. He provides regular on-call cover for the heart attack service at Southampton. For procedure details see above. James is currently the intervention lead for the NHS England SE Cardiac Network and is also chair of the HIOW ICS Cardiac Delivery Board. James qualified in 1995 from St George’s Hospital Medical School, where he was President of the student union. He did an intercalated BSc at St Mary’s Hospital Medical School in 1994. He did his house jobs and general professional training in London, obtaining his MRCP qualification in 1999. His specialist registrar training in Cardiology was in NE Thames from 2000 to 2010, completing his training in interventionional cardiology at St Bartholomew’s and the London Chest Hospitals. He was a locum consultant at Barts and the London NHS Trust before his appointment to Southampton in July 2011. James did a PhD in Cell Biology at University College London and continues to be actively invovled in clinical research trials with patients. James has a strong background in Medical Education and spent a year as an Education Research Fellow at the Royal College of Physicians in 2003, where he was developed new assessment methods that are now used for all doctors in training. He has taught for the RCP Education Department since 2003. He has an interest in the use of simulators to train cardiologists in complex procedures. He has published papers and book chapters. James has been on a number of national committees and regularly talks at meetings and conferences. James is from Cowes, Isle of Wight and is happy to be back on the South Coast. He lives with his wife and two daughters in Lymington. Outside of medicine he enjoys life in Lymington spending time with his family, keeping fit, sailing, any excuse to get on or in the water, the outdoors and collecting wine.

Cardiology - Interventional Cardiology
Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at University Hospital Southampton (busy regional heart attack unit and tertiary cardiac unit). Basic procedures done: Diagnostic angiograms, Interventional diagnostic procedures including physiology (pressure wire and iFR) and intra-coronary imaging (IVUS and OCT), Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with angioplasty and stents; Coronary procedures eg angiograms and stents all done via wrist (radial) approach where possible; bradycardia pacemakers; pericardiocentesis and DC cardioversion Specialist procedures: complex coronary intervention (including rotablation, shockwave and CTO), renal denervation (in studies only at present) and mitral valve trans-catheter edge-to-edge repair (mTEER). I am the Southampton lead for the CTO service and cath lab user group. Please note private procedures make up the tiny minority of of procedural volume (1-5%) as most of my procedural work is done on the NHS. All NHS procedural outcomes are publicly reported by NICOR (www.nicor.org.uk) in conjunction with BCIS on a regular basis. Private PCI procedures are done in the same facility with the same staff as NHS procedures. Happy to assess anyone with: angina, coronary artery disease, chest pain, strong family history of heart disease, previous stents or bypass surgery, shortness of breath (thought to be related to heart), palpitations, high blood pressure, murmur. Qualified in general cardiology so happy to see all aspects of heart related problems.
